Significant Passage
The author wrote "at nineteen, knowing who our friends are is the closest many of us can come to knowing who and what we are." (page 141). The first reason that this passage is important is because it shows one reason she was okay with binge drinking;it was because her friends were. It's said that you will become the top five people you're around, so if you're often around five binge drinkers, you're likely to become a binge drinker. Another reason that this passage is important to the book is because it holds a sort of warning. This author isn't entirely saying this to show why she wasn't really aware of her binge drinking, but she was also warning others to be friends with people who you would want to classify yourself as. If at nineteen you can only describe yourself by who you associate with its important that you chose carefully. If Koren had been friends with people who were focused on more long lasting things than how wasted they could get she would've has a different experience and view herself differently. To conclude, the author wrote the specific passage to not only explain but also to warn people of the importance of their decisions.
